In the Mānuka room we love playing lots of different board games. Board games are a fun way for tamariki to develop letter and number recognition skills, as well as learning how to play games and follow instructions. This particular game is called the “pirate game”.

There are spaces along the board with the letters of the alphabet on them, as well as spaces where the tamariki can collect gold coins, miss a turn or have to travel to an island that is on the board. The tamariki love to play this game with their peers! Each time they play this game, they develop their letter recognition skills as we talk about what letter they have landed. They also develop their sharing and turn taking skills as the tamariki patiently wait for their turn as their friends are taking their turns.

Counting skills are also being developed as they count the dots on the dice each time they roll it and then count how many spaces their counter moves. They are also learning important life skills about not always winning and how to persevere through this, as only one person can win at this game.
