Our Programme

programme

The Cat’s Pyjamas Nursery, Preschool and Prep School programmes are based on the principles of Te Whaariki – the Early Childhood Curriculum, which provides guidance for early child educators.

Te Whaariki is based on four principles that mean all the events, routines and activities that offer learning opportunities should:

  • EMPOWER children to learn.
  • See children as HOLISTIC learners who will be developing and learning a wide range of new skills and knowledge through many different experiences according to their own interests, at the same time.
  • Acknowledge the important and influential role FAMILY AND COMMUNITY play in the provision of the curriculum.
  • Allow children opportunities to be involved in RESPONSIVE, RECIPROCAL RELATIONSHIPS.

Learning and development in early childhood is not centred around subject areas but rather around developing children’s learning dispositions, such as courage, playfullness, trust, perserverance, confidence and curiosity.

Our curriculum encourages these dispositions along with the knowledge and skills that go with them, to become robust and enduring, thereby equipping children for future learning situations.

The Cat’s Pyjamas’ programme also uses a pro-active learning approach, which reflects the unique qualities of every child.

How will I see this affecting my child?

You will see staff taking time to observe your child’s progress at the centre and working with your child in areas he or she shows interest. Your child will be learning new skills. We understand that children learn best when they are interested and motivated by intriguing, challenging and fun activities and resources.

Your child’s special teacher will be able to explain what the goals are for your child and how the programme is helping your child to achieve them.

You will notice links between the goals of Te Whaariki and goals for your child when you talk to staff or read your child’s records. You will notice areas you have discussed with your child’s special teacher reflected in goals that have been set for him or her.
