Our Philosophy

At The Cat’s Pyjamas Preschool & Nursery we are committed to providing a safe, nurturing and uniquely enriching environment in which to foster your child’s health, physical, social, intellectual and emotional development. We consider ourselves a part of your family and community, striving to care for your child as well as you do.

Our aim is to build a passion for a lifetime of learning in every unique person. We believe teacher and child initiated activites are equally important for a child's development.

Our philosophy acknowledges that children will teach themselves and will drive their own learning given a rich, stimulating environment, supportive interactions with adults and the choice to plan and do things.

Our philosophy affirms that it is important to encourage children’s decision making, problem solving skills and independence by offering choice and positive experiences, while supporting children at the same time.

At The Cat’s Pyjamas children are free to choose activities, both planned and spontaneous, and are encouraged to try as many activities as possible. All our activities are child-centred allowing children to have fun, while encouraging a positive development of skills and knowledge as well as qualities of personality and positive behaviour.

We acknowledge our partnership with families in providing a stimulating programme that promotes high self-esteem, empowerment to learn and a respect for boundaries that operate in an effective group environment.

Our philosophy is underpinned by the following beliefs:

  • The belief that every child needs an established relationship with one teacher who is the child’s special teacher, who knows the child’s routines, likes, dislikes and strengths, and who encourages their emotional, physical and cognitive development.
  • The belief that every child deserves high individual attention, with high staff:child ratios.
  • The belief that every child deserves to live in an integrated, holistic close partnership with teachers and parents.
  • The belief that warm, loving care is fundamental to early learning and that care and education must be clearly integrated.
  • The belief that children thrive in a rich culture that supports children emotionally, socially and spiritually.
  • The belief that well-qualified staff interacting positively with children is the key to the formulation and delivery of a quality programmme.
  • The belief that all people are to be respected with equality.
